The 2006-2007 women’s hockey team will have a new captain and two new assistant captains as well as six rookies in the lineup. Laurissa Kenworthy
, an assistant captain last year, will continue to lead the team after taking over the “C” from Ashley Stephenson who graduated in the spring. Fiona Aiston
and Andrea Bevan
will join last year’s assistant captain Lauren Meschino
to form an extremely strong leadership team.
There are a few other changes to the roster which our fans will surely note. Rookie goaltender Liz Knox
(Stouffville, ON) and rookie defensemen Erin Weber
(North Bay, ON) and Alison Williams
(Whitby, ON) will certainly augment our defensive lineup. Knox and Williams both received honours as Toronto Star High School All-Stars last year as well as competing for their respective Junior teams – Markham-Stouffville and Durham. Weber was a defensive standout for the Sudbury Junior team and we are very pleased to see her in purple and gold this year. The Hawks are much stronger up front as well after adding firepower to our forward lines with Daniela DiFelice (Kitchener, ON), Laura Bartolini
(Mississauga, ON), and Stephanie Crarey
Head Coach, RICK OSBORNE
, says “Again this year we have excellent leadership, rookies that will all make a contribution to this team and a solid core of veteran players that are dedicated, skilled, and they know how to win. Our team mission is to defend our OUA Championship and return to the CIS Championship again but our vision is to focus on the process and enjoy the journey each practice and game at a time. There are many good teams in the CIS and taking it one game at a time is the only approach that will prove to be successful.”
Goaltending: Morgan “Goose” Wielgosz, one of the country’s top university goaltenders in 2006, will team up with Knox to form a top notch duo. Goaltending will be one of the team’s major strengths this season.
Defence: Andrea Bevan
and Lauren Meschino
will be two of the best in the CIS. Jessica Judges
and Vanessa Bennett
are also steady, experienced, and reliable players behind the blue line. Weber and Williams will blend right in with the veteran defencemen to form a strong back end for the Hawks.
Forwards: Lauren Barch
, Andrea Ironside
, Kenworthy, Aiston, Samantha Cully
, Jennifer Heslin, Nicole Gooding
, Ashley McMillin
, and Kate Psota
are all experienced and talented forwards who will help rookies DiFelice, Bartolini, and Crarey find their way into what will be a high scoring group of snipers.
Coaching/Support Staff: RICK OSBORNE
is joined by Jim Rayburn
who will be working double duty as Head Scout and Assistant Coach. Assistant Coach Cindy Eadie
, Performance Coordinator Jamie Carlson
, and Student Manager/Therapist Nicole Lunau
will round out the staff for the season.
