Laurier: 2 Western: 3
WATERLOO – Mustang Forward Jason De Thomasis scored in the 90th minute to lift the #3 Nationally ranked Western Mustangs (4-0-1) over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (1-2-2) 3-2.
Western opened the scoring with a fast break goal off of a Laurier corner-kick. Hawk Goaltender Youssef El-Abbar managed to make the first save, however the rebound went right to Mustang Michel Daoust who put the ball into the open net.
At the half the Western Mustangs held a 1-0 lead over the Golden Hawks.
In the 71st minute of play Hawk Daniel Toto
found some empty space around him and took a shot from the middle of the offensive zone. The ball went over the outstretched hands of Mustang goalkeeper Haidar Al Shaibani to tie the game at ones.
Not to be beaten the Mustangs fought back with another goal in the 79th minute as Mustang defender Kyle Ramsey joined the rush and found the back of the net.
Play from both teams continued at a torrid pace until Laurier’s Alex Doma
was dragged down by a Mustang defender leading to a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. Sophomore forward Damir Hadziavdic
scored as he bent his shot into the upper left hand corner of the net to tie the game at two’s.
One minute later the Mustangs charged down the field and scored to win the game 3-2.
“Those are two of the greatest goals I have ever seen,” said Head Coach BARRY MACLEAN
referring to the goals by Damir and Daniel. “Unfortunately, some rookie mistakes took their toll in the end.”
The Golden Hawks now look to the Windsor Lancers who they face on Sunday, September 17th. The Western Mustangs will take their undefeated record into Waterloo as they face the Waterloo Warriors on September 17th.
