WATERLOO – After a nation-wide search, Wilfrid Laurier University is proud to announce the appointment of Kelly Nobes
as the head coach of the Golden Hawk men’s hockey program.
Nobes replaces Steve Martell who left the Golden Hawk program last month for a teaching opportunity at Cape Breton University.
"I'm excited about the opportunity to lead the Laurier men's hockey team," said Nobes. "It is quite evident to me that Laurier takes its athletics seriously and the recent success of several Golden Hawk teams, including hockey verifies that. I look forward to building on a strong hockey tradition and plan to set the bar high for the years to come."
Nobes comes from the Royal Military College hockey program where for the last five seasons he has led his team into the playoffs. He was a former league all-star for the McGill Redmen in the late 1990's as well as an assistant captain. During his time with the Redmen, he placed ninth among scorers with 181 points in four seasons. After playing four seasons for the team he acted as an assistant coach for two years before moving on to RMC.
"Taking over a National Championship contending team required an individual with seasoned Head Coaching experience," stated PETER BAXTER
, Director of Athletics and Recreation. "Kelly Nobes
has the full package: experience as a university athlete at McGill and Head Coaching experience at RMC."
The men’s hockey program opens their season on October 13th at the University of Toronto.
