ANTIGONISH, N.S. – The Golden Hawks were unable to repeat as national champions as they fell to the Alberta Pandas 2-1 in the gold medal match.

The silver medal is the team’s second in the school’s brief five year history at the tournament.

Alberta’s Jenna Barber scored what would be the game winner on Laurier’s second five-on-three disadvantage. The team from Edmonton would roll their two-key lines for the remainder of the game, not allowing the Hawks to get control outside of their zone.

"The teams were evenly matched today," said head coach RICK OSBORNE. "Alberta was able to play the puck well in front of our net for the game winner and we weren’t able to get it back."

Scoring first in the game was third-year Laurissa Kenworthy who put the puck in the net just 11-seconds into Panda captain Kristen Hagg’s penalty. Alberta’s Jamie Coffin picked up the tying goal less then five-minutes later.

"We’re obviously not happy with the loss, but we’re ok with leaving the rink with the silver, said Hawk captain Ashley Stephenson. "The pucks could have bounced either way this evening and they ended up in their favour."

Hawk Backstop Morgan Wielgosz stopped 19 of the 21 shots her way while Holly Tarleton 17 of 18 shots on net.

Andrea Bevan was named player of the game for the Hawks while Laurissa Kenworthy and Ashley Stephenson were named to the tournament all-star team for their performances.

Although the Golden Hawks lose three key athletes to graduation including captain Ashley Stephenson and forwards Candice Djukic and Lyndsay Arbeau, they once again will be a team striving to improve on this year’s performance.
