Laurier: 1 Guelph: 0
With high expectations for the season the mens soccer team wanted to start the season off right with their opener against Guelph. The men showed signs of greatness early on with a nice through ball by Andy Incitti
to Steve Cox
who’s blistering shot was just wide. Guelph stood their ground though and the Hawks had to rely on excellent goal keeping from Mark Ignor
late in the first half to keep the game even at zero.
The second half was much like the first with the game being very scrappy, not what the Hawks wanted. Desperate for a win, the Hawks pressed late in the game and began to create chances for themselves. Dan Glibota
received the ball just outside the eighteen-yard line, made a nice move and enabled himself to get a solid shot off that just missed. Towards the very end of the game, what looked to be the final attack, Richie Antolcic
flew by a couple of defenders and managed to get a cross over which Tim Labar
headed into the back of the net to put the Hawks up 1-0. That goal proved to be the winner as the final score ended 1-0.
After the game coach BARRY MACLEAN
was heard to say that “It definitely wasn’t a good game on the Hawks behalf and they are going to have to pick up their socks if they want to keep on winning.” Still he was happy to come away with three points.
