Laurier Names Patricia Kitchen as New Associate Director of Recreation and Facilities
Waterloo, ON - In an effort to address the growth of Laurier’s Intramurals and Recreation Programs, Director of Athletics and Recreation, PETER BAXTER is pleased to announce the appointment of Patricia Kitchen as the new Associate Director: Recreation and Facilities.

“Patricia Kitchen is a nationally recognized leader in recreation who has proven abilities to build staff teams who are empowered to do their best and are committed to student-centered facilities and recreation programming”, stated Baxter. Her experience in student leadership training has earned her honours within the Canadian Intramural Recreation Association and The Life Saving Society, Ontario Branch.

Kitchen comes to Laurier from George Brown College where she is currently Director of Athletics, Student Life and Alumni Affairs. From 1995-2002, she held the post of Chairperson, Campus Recreation at the University of Western Ontario overseeing Western’s entire recreation programs and facilities. Currently, Kitchen also serves as President of the Life Saving Society, Ontario Branch and is Team Manager of the Canadian Life Saving Team.

“I am looking forward to coming to Wilfrid Laurier University which is highly regarded for its undergraduate education and working with the Athletic Department staff who are well respected in sport and recreation in Ontario and Canada.” Kitchen also stated that this is an exciting time to be working at Laurier with the launch of the new fitness facility in the fall of 2005. “This position offers an opportunity for me to further enhance my skills and address new challenges.”

Over the past seven years, Laurier’s Recreation Programs have grown exponentially moving from 225 Intramural Teams to over 675. Instructional participants in aerobics, dance, and martial arts have also leaped from 450 students to well over 3,000. The Athletic Complex completed a 3-million dollar renovation in 2000 and currently a 4-million dollar expansion of the Fitness Centre and addition of Kinesiology labs is under construction with a scheduled opening in August 2005. Kitchen’s first task will be to implement the operational plan of the new facility.

“We are absolutely delighted to acquire such a highly respected and experienced expert in the field of recreation for an ever expanding program for students”, stated David McMurray, Assistant Vice-President of Student Services and Dean of Students. “Pat’s leadership will bring an enhanced level of service to the Athletic and Recreation Department as a whole.”

Kitchen begins her tenure at Laurier on May 1st, 2005.
