The past week in Golden Hawk athletics belongs to the Women’s Hockey Team as they are CIS National champions.
The week began with Golden Hawks Cindy Eadie
(Brantford, ON) and Ashley Stephenson
(Mississauga, ON) being named to the CIS All-Canadian team. Andrea Bevan
(Collingwood, ON) was also recognized as she was named to the CIS All-Rookie team. The Hawks would then tend to the business of the national championship tournament, as the opened with a 6-0 blanking of the Manitoba Bisons. Samantha Cully
(Mississauga, ON) scored two goals in the win, while Amanda Joseph
(Oakville, ON) Laurissa Kenworthy
(Newmarket, ON), and Ashley Stephenson
(Mississauga, ON) each had two points in the win. Eadie was able to make all 15 saves for her third consecutive playoff shutout. The women would then move on to play the Concordia Stingers.
The Hawks would get on the board twice in the first period as goals from Diana Cicchillo
(Maple, ON) and a shorthanded marker by Joseph gave the Hawks a two-goal lead heading into the second period. The Stingers would cut the lead in half early in the second, but Cully would restore the two-goal advantage with a powerplay goal approximately two minutes later. Another Concordia goal made it 3-2 heading into the third. However, the defence and Eadie would remain solid for the final twenty minutes as the Hawks would take the game 3-2 and advance to the Gold Medal game versus the Alberta Golden Bears, the #1 ranked team in the country who had not lost a game since Oct 13, 2001.
The first period was scoreless, but the Hawks would score quickly in the second period. 28 seconds into the second Joseph put the Hawks up 1-0 with her third goal in three tournament games. The Hawks would score again at the 13 minute mark as Jennifer Heslin (Bolton, ON) made it 2-0 Laurier. Jessica Judges
made it a three-goal period for the Hawks (Pickering, ON), however the Bears would notch a goal late in the second, making it 3-1 Hawks heading into the third period. The Bears threw 25 shots at Eadie in the affair, but the best goaltender in the country proved her mettle yet again, as she was stellar down the stretch, making all the important saves. Joseph would add an empty-netter with 11 seconds remaining, giving her four goals in the tournament, and the Hawks the Gold Medal. Ashley Stephenson
was rewarded with her outstanding play throughout the tournament as she was named tournament MVP. Stephenson was also named to the All-Tournament team as was Cindy Eadie
and Laurissa Kenworthy

(Kitchener, ON) captain of the men’s hockey team was named an OUA Second-Team All-Star. Also, Andrew Agro

(Waterloo, ON), and Bryon Hickey
(Burlington, ON) were invited to participate in the CFL’s 2005 evaluation camp.
