Toronto, ON – Yesterday the OUA recognized the top female scholar athletes at the Women of Influence luncheon at the Sheraton Centre in downtown Toronto. Presenting the recognition plaque was five time Olympian and silver medalist in track and field, Charmaine Crooks. Crooks spoke to the crowd of over 800 as the keynote speaker.
All 18 Ontario University’s had a representative, and Laurier’s was ice hockey forward Julie Mitchell
After completing her first year of University, Julie holds an 11.3 GPA out of 12. The Business major comes from London where she attended Saunders Secondary School. In her first season with the team, she played in all 22 games of the regular season and was a member of the provincial championship team.
“Julie is a versatile player who plays both defense and forward and is an asset to the women’s hockey program,” said Head Coach RICK OSBORNE
Mitchell, 20 years of age, was the captain of her high school hockey team and also played for the Bluewater Hawks.
Mitchell received the Alumni Scholarship for her community involvement, leadership skills and academic achievement. She also received an academic entrance scholarship for her high school entrance grades.
Wilfrid Laurier University prides itself on strong National recognition for academic excellence. Laurier also has a rich tradition of Athletic achievements and has won numerous national and provincial championships over its history.
