Cheryl Pounder Joins Golden Hawk Women’s Hockey Coaching Staff
[Waterloo, ON] – The Wilfrid Laurier Department of Athletics and Recreation is excited to announce the addition of Cheryl Pounder as an Assistant Coach for the Women’s Hockey team.

Pounder is no stranger to the Golden Hawk uniform. A four-time Ontario University Athletic Association (now OUA) All-Star as well as OUAA Rookie of the Year, the Laurier athlete was recognized as the WLU Female Athlete of the Year in 1997. Since leaving Wilfrid Laurier with her Kinesiology degree, she has won five world championship gold medals as well as an Olympic gold. While continuing to work to represent Canada at future Olympics, Cheryl will carry on playing for the Toronto Aeros in the National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL).

“I’m glad to be returning to my roots where I developed my hockey skills,” said an enthusiastic Pounder. “Hopefully I’ll be able to contribute to the development of an already-strong group of athletes.”

Pounder will be making use of National-level off-ice training and conditioning methods to help further improve the Golden Hawks’ performance in the coming season. Her work, in combination with Laurier Athletic Therapist Jamie Carlson and National Team Conditioning Coach Chris Dalcin, will produce one of the most advanced and unique training programs in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS).

Women’s Hockey Head Coach RICK OSBORNE is excited to be working with Cheryl again. Osborne has worked with her in a coach-player relationship at the club level. “Cheryl is not only a world class hockey player and athlete; she is a student of the game. She will make our players better and make me a better coach.”

Osborne just completed a stellar season with the Hawks, winning the OUA Women’s Hockey Championship and finishing fifth at the nationals.

“The opportunity for Cheryl to mentor under Coach Osborne’s leadership fits with our university goal of developing professional female coaches who will be the future of our National and CIS programs,” stated Peter Baxter, Laurier’s Director of Athletics & Recreation.

The Women’s Hockey team is set to open the 2004-2005 season in a repeat of last year’s OUA Championship game as the Golden Hawks face Queen’s on October 22nd at Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex.
