Allin, Chesson honoured by OUA

HAMILTON (February 28, 2013) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's basketball team had two players honoured by the OUA on Thursday as the conference announced the West Division all-stars for the 2012-13 season.

Maxwell Allin of Chatham, Ont., was named an OUA First Team All-Star while Matthew Chesson of Whitby, Ont., was named to the OUA All-Rookie Team.

Allin earns his first recognition on the OUA first team after being named a two-time second team all-star and all-rookie in 2009-10. In his fourth season, Allin won the CIS scoring race, accumulating 441 points for the Golden Hawks, despite only appearing in 19 games. He averaged 23.2 points per game and was generous with the rock, adding an average of 4.6 assists to his impressive numbers. Allin finished third amongst OUA rebounders as he grabbed 179 boards this season.

As for Chesson, he continues Laurier's run of eight consecutive season of having a player named to the all-rookie team. The freshman forward had a strong season for the Hawks, finishing second in the conference in blocks with 27 while averaging 5.6 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. He also shot an impressive 43.8 percent from the floor.

2012-13 OUA MEN'S WEST ALL-STARS

FIRST TEAM

Lien Phillip - Windsor

Yoosrie Salhia - Lakehead

Ryan Thomson - Lakehead

Taylor Black - McMaster

Maxwell Allin - Laurier

SECOND TEAM

Enrico Diloreto - Windsor

Josh Collins - Windsor

Joe Rocca - McMaster

Dan McCarthy - Guelph

Mark Gibson - Brock

ALL-ROOKIES

Rohan Boney - McMaster

Matt Chesson - Laurier

Joe Hart - Lakehead

Isaack Egueh - Brock

George Johnson - Western

Badgers rally to end Hawks season

WATERLOO, Ont. (February 20, 2013) - For the second consecutive season, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's basketball team's season came to an end on home court as they lost 81-75 to the Brock Badgers in their OUA West Quarter-final matchup on Wednesday night at the Athletic Complex.

Laurier, who held an eight-point lead after three quarters of play, could not hold off the Badgers who outscored the Hawks 29-15 in the final quarter to come away with the victory.

Mark Gibson of Toronto, led the way for the Badgers with 20 points and seven rebounds while Tshing Kasamba of St. Catharines, Ont., Jameson Tipping of Orangeville, Ont., and Mike Luby of Kenora, Ont., also reached double-digits in scoring on the night.

As for the Hawks, Maxwell Allin of Chatham, Ont., was once again Laurier's offensive catalyst as he finished with 23 points, eight rebounds and five assists. William Coulthard of Oakville, Ont., and Aiddian Walters of Vaughan, Ont., also chipped in with 18 and 14 points respectively while Nathan Thompson of Brampton, Ont., scored a career-high 12 points.

In what was a fairly even game throughout the contest that saw both teams go on big scoring runs, it was the Badgers who would jump out to the first half lead as they capitalized on their offensive rebounding to hold a 39-32 advantage at the half.

Laurier responded in the third quarter with a great offensive performance, dropping 28 points in the quarter to overtake the Badgers and lead 60-52 heading into the final 10 minutes.

However, the Hawks inability to control Brock on the inside would hurt them in the final quarter as Brock put up 29 points of their own to take the win and advance to the OUA Quarter-finals.

Rebounding proved to be the key stat in the contest as Brock outrebounded Laurier 53-42, including 22-15 on the offensive glass.

While the loss is a tough one for the Hawks, this very young team will return all of its members next year, including CIS leading scorer Allin. Head coach Peter Campbell and his squad will look to build on this experience and improve upon it for the 2013-14 season.

PREVIEW: Laurier hosts Brock in opening round

WATERLOO, Ont. (February 20, 2013) - After an exciting final week of action that saw them overtake the Brock Badgers in the OUA West standings, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's basketball team will tangle with that same Badgers squad in the opening round of the OUA playoffs Wednesday night.

Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Athletic Complex. The game will be webcast live on Hawk TV Live and will be broadcast on Rogers TV Waterloo on tape delay at 9 p.m.

The Hawks grabbed the fourth seed in the division last week thanks to a stretch of games that saw them win their last three contests, as well as four of their last five, to close out the regular season. When that streak is combined with consecutive losses by the fifth-seeded Badgers to end the season, it gave Laurier the all-important home playoff game by virtue of a head-to-head point differential tiebreaker.

Laurier and Brock met on two occasions this season with the road team coming out on top in each game. For the Hawks, they earned an 85-70 victory over Brock back on January 19 in St. Catharines while the Badgers returned the favour two weeks ago at the Athletic Complex with an 80-70 victory.

However, since that loss, the Hawks have won three games in a row, including the two games they needed to win last week in order for them to have any chance of hosting this game. Laurier upended the Guelph Gryphons 96-82 on the road before returning home to sweep their season series with the Western Mustangs, 102-84.

Across the court, Brock has stumbled their way into the playoffs. In both of their losses to Waterloo and Windsor last week, the Badgers held big leads at the half, 25 points against the Warriors and 13 against the Lancers, before losing both contests in the second half. With the team having played so inconsistently in their game as of late, it will be important for the Hawks to jump on the Badgers early to take away any confidence the team may have.

To do that, Laurier will turn to their big guns in the form of Maxwell Allin of Chatham, Ont., and William Coulthard of Oakville. Allin, the CIS scoring champion after averaging 23.2 points per game this season, had one of the best all-around games in the country this season as he was also eighth in Canada in both rebounds and assists per game. Meanwhile, Coulthard had a fantastic sophomore season, finishing fourth in the OUA in points per game at 19.4.

To win this game though, the Hawks will need their role players to step up as well. Rookies Michael Grantis and Garrison Thomas have provided some much-needed scoring depth off the bench and both will be relied upon tonight to perform as they have been in the past five games.

As for the Badgers, they will need Jameson Tipping to put on a similar performance as to the one he had when Brock upended Laurier on their home court on February 6. In that game, the Badgers leading scorer dropped 21 points while pulling down 14 rebounds in Brock's 10 point win. Seven foot centre Mike Luby will also need to be a presence in the post for Brock while also provided a secondary scoring option.

Laurier and Brock have met just one in the playoffs in the last seven years, that coming all the way back in 2006 when the Hawks edged the Badgers 54-49 on the road.

The third year history major had 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting, seven rebounds, three assists and three blocks as the Golden Hawks defeated Guelph 68-51 on Wednesday. She then had 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting, 11 rebounds, five assists and five blocks as the Hawks edged the Mustangs, their first round playoff opponent, 59-58 on Saturday. Those numbers helped her finish the season with an 11.1 points per game scoring average to lead her team, while her eight blocks gave her 38 for the season, second-best in the CIS.

This is the first time that Ellenor has been named the Female Athlete of the Week.

Allin helped the Golden Hawks close out the season with back-to-back wins, earning the team a home playoff game as they finished fourth in the OUA West division. The fourth year arts major scored 34 points on 58 percent (11-19) shooting to go with 10 rebounds and two assists in the Hawks 96-82 win over Guelph. Allin then registered his second career triple-double, a 30 point, 12 assist, 10 rebound effort in a 102-84 win over Western. His outstanding week also earned him the CIS Scoring Title as he finished the season averaging 23.9 points per game, while also finishing eighth in the nation in both rebounds (9.4) and assists (4.6) per game.

This marks the 12th time in his career that Allin has been named the Male Athlete of the Week.

WATERLOO, Ont. (January 12, 2013) - Coming off a giant upset win over the No. 8 Windsor Lancers on Wednesday night, the Laurier men's basketball team failed to capitalize on their momentum Saturday afternoon as the Guelph Gryphons rode a strong first half performance to a 94-88 victory.

However, the day was not without highlights for the Hawks as Maxwell Allin of Chatham, Ont., scored a career-high and record-breaking 43 points in the loss for the Hawks.

Guelph came out on fire in the first quarter as they jumped out to a 26-20 lead. The Gryphons extended their lead in the second frame, outscoring the Hawks 28-21 to jump out to a 54-41 lead going into the second half. With the score 76-63 heading into the final quarter, the Golden Hawks finally found their offensive touch, with Allin leading the attack. The Hawks outscored Guelph 25-18 in the final quarter, but their comeback fell just short. The 94-88 loss drops the Hawks to 3-8 in conference play while the Gryphons move to 4-7

Guelph's attack was led by Dan McCarthy of Guelph, Ont., and Zachary Angus of Burlington, Ont., who combined for over half of the Gryphons points. Angus had four steals in addition to his 26 points, while McCarthy had six assists and rebounds to go along with his 27 points.

Allin's 43 points were in large part thanks to his six three-pointers, and 11 free throws made. He also set the modern day record for points in a single game, just a week after teammate William Coulthard of Oakville, Ont., had matched the previous record.

Jamar Forde of Mississauga, Ont. contributed 15 points while the aforementioned Coulthard chipped in with 14.

The Hawks next game will come Wednesday night against the Waterloo Warriors (1-9).
Hawks pull off upset of No. 8 Lancers

WATERLOO, Ont. (January 9, 2013) - William Coulthard of Oakville, Ont., and Maxwell Allin of Chatham, Ont., put on an offensive clinic on Wednesday night as the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks defeated the No. 8 Windsor Lancers 112-92 at the Athletic Complex.

With the win, the Hawks snap a five game losing streak in conference action to improve to 3-7 on the season while the Lancers fall to 7-3.

Fresh off an astounding 39-point performance against McMaster which earned him CIS Athlete of the Week honours, Coulthard was right back at it on Wednesday. The sophomore guard dropped 36 points on the Lancers, including shooting an impressive 7-of-15 from three-point range. It is the third time in four games, including non-conference action, that Coulthard has eclipsed the 30-point barrier.

As for Allin, the fourth year guard returned to the lineup after missing the past two games due to personal issues. Playing with a heavy heart, Allin didn't miss a step as he finished with a double-double of 28 points and 10 assists, the fifth time he's accomplished the feat in just eight games this season. He also added seven rebounds and three steals in 38 minutes.

After falling behind early in the game, the Hawks battled back and exploded for 33 points in the second quarter thanks to some sloppy play from Windsor which saw the OUA Wests top team plagued by turnovers and poor decision making. The offensive outburst helped Laurier take a 54-42 lead at the half.

Windsor attempted to battle back in the second half but everytime they made a run, the Hawks would answer. Despite a size disadvantage, the Hawks held their own on the boards, finishing the game with just one less rebound than the Lancers, which denied Windsor many second chance opportunities.

The game was put out of reach midway through the fourth quarter when Windsor coach Chris Oliver received two technical fouls, sending Allin to the line for five shots. He made four to give the Hawks a 20 point cushion, one they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.

Aside of Coulthard and Allin, both Aiddian Walters of Vaughn, Ont., and Patrick Donnelly of Oakville, Ont., had impressive performances. Donnelly earned a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds while Walters had 12 points and three assists.

Enrico Diloreto of London, Ont., finished as the top scorer for Windsor as he had 23 points.

Laurier will look to keep their winning ways going on Saturday afternoon when they lost the Guelph Gryphons (3-7) at the Athletic Complex. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
