HAMILTON, Ont. (May 16, 2012) - The best baseball players in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) will be on display at the Rogers Centre on Sunday, May 20 as the 2011 champion Toronto Varsity Blues take on the OUA all-stars in the sixth annual OUA Baseball All-Star Showcase.

The Varsity Blues claimed the OUA championship with a victory over the Western Mustangs in the OUA finals in 2011. The Varsity Blues finished in a tie for third in the regular season with a 12-9 record and ran the table in the double elimination championship tournament defeating Western, Laurier and Western again to win their first championship since 2003.

Toronto had outstanding pitching in 2011 led by veterans Marek Deska (Mississauga, Ont.), Tyler Wilson (Port Hope, Ont.) and Andrew Bergman (Pickering, Ont.). Though the Blues offense wasnt remarkable, the team pushed across enough wins to allow their pitchers to control the games.

The OUA all-star team will be comprised of student-athletes from the other seven schools that complete on the OUA circuit, including Laurier, Western, Brock, Guelph, McMaster, Queen's and Waterloo. OUA Pitcher of the Year, Adam Lentz (Calgary, Alta.) of the Waterloo Warriors will get the start for the all-star team, which also includes 2011 Hitter of the Year Shaun Valeriote (Guelph, Ont.) of the Brock Badgers and OUA Rookie of the Year Jonathan Brouse (Port Perry, Ont.) of the Laurier Golden Hawks.

The 2012 game marks the sixth annual OUA All-Star Showcase. In 2011, Brock came back late to rally past the All-Stars in an exciting game. The all-star team holds a 2-2-1 record with the inaugural game in 2007 ending in a tie.

The OUA Baseball All-Star Showcase will take place following the Toronto Blue Jays game against the New York Mets which begins at 1:07 p.m. Fans can enter Rogers Centre through Gate 8 free of charge following the Blue Jays game (approximately 4:30 p.m.), or purchase tickets to both by visiting bluejays.com.

The OUA All-Star Showcase is made possible with the help of Wilson, Pizza Pizza and the Toronto Blue Jays.

OUA BASEBALL ALL-STAR SHOWCASE ROSTERS

TORONTO VARSITY BLUES
Name Pos.
Fort Wayne Crown Champions in CHL Finals

Fort Wayne, IN.,(May 10, 2012) The Fort Wayne Komets claimed the Central Hockey Leagues Championship title Monday night with a 6-3 victory over the Wichita Thunder in the 5th game of the best of seven series. This marks the 9th CHL Championship title for the Komets, an occasion made even more exciting by the fact that it was the teams 60th season with the league.

Among the championship team is Laurier Golden Hawks men's hockey alumnus Jean-Michel Rizk. Rizk, of Dunham, Que., spent four seasons with the Hawks between 2007 and 2011. During his time with the Hawks Rizk was a high scoring player every season. During the 2008/09 season Rizk was the OUA scoring leader, averaging 2 points per game. Rizk was a 3 time OUA all-star and a CIS all-star.

For the 2011-2012 season Rizk joined the CHL as a member of the Fort Wayne Komets. In his first season with the Komets Rizk helped them to a first place finish in the tight Turner Conference with a 31 point season. After finishing first in their conference the Komets still had a long way to go in the post season. After taking their first series against Rapid City in 6 games the Komets dug themselves a two game hole against the Missouri Mavericks early in that series. Game three would be the turning point in the series in a game that saw Rizk get two goals including the winner. Brett Smith of Guelph, Ont., also added an empty net marker to make it a 3-1 victory for the Komets. In the end the Komets would force a game 7 and defeat the Mavericks to move onto the CHL Championship.

In the CHL Final the Komets met with the Wichita Thunder. Wichita finished the regular season with the best record in the CHL and had defeated the Komets in both games the teams had met this season. Despite facing a strong opponent the Komets won the first 3 games to take a dominating lead in the series. After a loss in game 4 the Komets entered game five up 3-1 in the series and ready to close things out. The Komets jumped to an early lead and by the end of the first were in control of the game with a 5-2 lead. The Komets would hold onto the lead for the remainder of the game to claim the CHL Championship. Rizk tallied a total of 14 points in 18 playoff games and looks to be continuing the success he had with the Golden Hawks in the CHL with Fort Wayne.

OUA'S WOMEN OF INFLUENCE: Laura Crocker

HAMILTON, Ont. (May 4, 2012) - Ontario University Athletics (OUA) will recognize the top female scholar-athletes from across the province at a luncheon on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville, Ont.

The event honours female student-athletes who have excelled in their chosen sports, fields of study and community involvement. This year's guest speaker will be dual-sport national athlete, Olympic gold medalist and OUA alumnus Heather Moyse.

Name: Laura Crocker

School: Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks

Sport: Curling

Program: Psychology

Year of study: 4

Laurier's top female scholar-athlete is curler Laura Crocker. The fourth-year psychology major is a two-time CIS Academic All-Canadian who currently holds a 11.29 GPA. Laura was honoured with Laurier's prestigious Outstanding Woman of Laurier (OWL) Award in a ceremony held in March.

On the ice, she is a two-time CIS champion, an OUA champion, a First Team All-Star and a CIS First Team All-Canadian. She recently skipped Laurier's women's curling team (Team Canada) to gold at the Kariuzawa International Curling Championships. Congratulations Laura!

What is your proudest academic achievement?

My proudest academic achievement is my 2008/2009 CIS Academic All-Canadian award. Adjusting to university life was difficult, and trying to curl at a high level and still see academic success was at times a struggle as I got used to university. Receiving this award showed me that I'm capable of excelling in both school and curling and motivated me even more for the future.

What is your proudest athletic achievement?

The 2011/2012 curling season was the proudest and most memorable season I have ever had. Our curling team at WLU defended both our OUA and CIS championships and won a gold medal at an international tournament in Japan where we represented Canada. We achieved every goal we set for ourselves going into the start of the season and that is something pretty special.

What is your most memorable community related moment?

I volunteer in a developmental education classroom, and I often work specifically with one student. Watching her progress faster than we ever thought imaginable over the course of this school has been a truly incredible experience. Knowing that I have had even a small part in her success is a feeling and memory that will last a lifetime.

What woman has most influenced you, and why?

My mother has always had a strong influence in my life. As a female athlete it's so important to have someone in your life believing in you and reminding you that you can succeed in sport, and my mom has always supported me unconditionally through everything I have ever pursued. I attribute much of my success to having that kind of support in my life and my mom has always been there to provide it for me.

What are your future plans?

Next year, I'll be taking a year off of school to focus on curling and decide where life will take me next. I will have a busy curling season striving towards a spot at the 2013 Scotties and doing all I can to advance my game. I likely will continue my schooling after next year, and I someday see myself in a career where I can work with children in some capacity.

Join OUA as Heather speaks about her career on and off the field, and inspires a unique group of accomplished young women to continue to pursue excellence in sport and in life.

OUA recognizes the following sponsors for their support of this event; belairdirect, Centaur Products, Pioneer Energy, Wilson Sports Equipment of Canada and Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport and Physical Activity (CAAWS).

- courtesy of the OUA

Women's Fastpitch Welcomes Alumni Home

Entering their 10th full season in existence, the Women's Faspitch team will be celebrating their milestone by welcoming home its Fastpitch Alumni this September.

This competitive club has come a long way in its young history; from a small group of interested athletes who wanted to create a softball team and were able to do so in 2001, although struggling in its early years, they have now become one of the most successful university softball programs in the country.

All former Golden Hawks Fastpitch players are invited to return home to Laurier on September 8th when they will take part in a variety of activities as well as have a pair of exhibition games against the current Golden Hawks as they wrap-up their 2012 training camp and prepare for the teams home openers against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues and Guelph Gryphons on September 15/16, 2012.

"Our Fastpitch Alumni are doing some great things in the world and we are excited to reunite with the whole group of them," says Head Coach Kevin Fagg who has been with the program since 2005. "Whether they have continued their careers in softball or have now settled down with a family, I think it is a great initiative to re-connect with the players who started this program ten years ago."

"These girls will be quite surprised to see how far we've come since then." added Assistant Coach Matt Allen and newly appointed President of the Ontario Intercollegiate Women's Fastpitch Association (www.oiwfa.org) in which the Golden Hawks compete in.

In its first four years, the team was under the umbrella of WLUSU Campus Clubs and struggled to find any success on the diamond. It was in 2007 when the Golden Hawks would upset the heavily favoured Western Mustangs 4-3 in extra innings in what is still considered one of the most exciting games in the Ontario Intercollegiate loop. This victory marked a noticeable change for the club who went on to be invited to the first ever National Championships in Calgary capturing a silver medal, only to host the following year in 2009 and claim the National title against the same University of Saskatchewan Lady Saxons who defeated them the year prior.

Since 2008, the Golden Hawks have captured four medals and have finished no lower than third place in the regular season. 2011 marked an historic year for the Lady Hawks Fastpitch program as they were moved from WLUSU Campus Clubs under the Athletics and Recreation Department as a Competitive Club.

"We have come a long way, commented Fagg. "We've had the opportunity to host both a Provincial and National Championship in the Region of Waterloo and managed to bring a pile of well-earned hardware back to the school. Our alumni have really set the bar high for our program and we will continue to pursue our own excellence moving forward."

Fagg adds. "not only have we had an impact on the school but there seems to be a new buzz in the softball community. From hosting mini-clinics to making our appearance at minor sports events, we feel like we have been making a difference in the softball world and can only hope to continue doing so in the future."

Any alumni interested in attending the Fastpitch Homecoming on September 8th, 2012 in Waterloo are asked to RSVP to Matt Allen (matt_allen44@hotmail.com).

This has pushed our current facility to the limits of its capacity and by doubling the space, it will allow all of our users to continue to enjoy their experience."

The expansion will feature a dramatic increase in the amount of space for the cardio, strength training and stretching zones in the facility while also adding room for TRX Training. It will also increase the existing space for free weights by more than 30 percent.

In addition, the updated facility will feature a divisible exercise area that will allow for circuit training, personal or group training and womens only workout times.

"By providing a number of different workout options, we believe that this expansion will reduce the waiting time for equipment while also providing a welcoming atmosphere for all of our constituents," continued Baxter. "Users will be able to move through the facility with greater ease in a space that will be very welcoming to everyone."

With space in the Fitness Centre more than doubling by the completion of the project, targeted for September 2013, the Department of Athletics and Recreation will purchase nearly $800,000 worth of new equipment.
