WATERLOO, Ont. (July 10, 2013) - Wilfrid Laurier University manager of men's football operations and head coach Michael Faulds announced this week his coaching staff for the upcoming 2013 season.
Highlighting the on field group are five new faces including offensive line coach Irv Daymond, receivers coach Mark Surya, running backs coach Ryan Lynch, quarterback technician Wally Gabler and defensive line coach Anthony Cannon.
This group joins the returning group of coaches led by defensive coordinator and associate head coach Ron VanMoerkerke and newly-appointed special teams coordinator Dwayne Cameron, who has also taken on the role as recruiting coordinator for the team.
"I am extremely happy with the coaching staff that we have assembled," commented Faulds on the group that will assist him this season. "We have maintained the rich Laurier tradition and history with the seven coaches that will continue from last year's staff and have added great new insight and ideas with the five new coaches. I believe this is the perfect combination to make Laurier successful again."
All five of the new faces will be recognized by fans of not only the Golden Hawks but of football in general. Two of the biggest names are Daymond and Cannon. Daymond had a 10 year CFL career playing offensive line for the Ottawa Rough Riders. Drafted in the sixth round by Ottawa in 1984, he went on to twice earn CFL All-Star awards. Since his playing career ended, he has coached with both the Ottawa Gee-Gees and the McGill Redmen.
As for Cannon, he played college football with Tulane University in Louisiana from 2002 until 2005. Following a great career with the Green Wave, he was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the seventh round of the 2006 NFL Draft. He spent three years with the Lions before moving on to the CFL's Toronto Argonauts.
The remaining three names will all be familiar to Golden Hawk fans. Surya, the new receivers coach, played two years with the Golden Hawks after using his first three years of eligibility with Queen's. A Vanier Cup winner with the Gaels, Surya played in 16 games for Laurier making 43 catches for 544 yards and six touchdowns.
Coaching the running backs will be another former Hawk in Lynch. A two-time Yates Cup Champion and Vanier Cup Champion with Laurier, Lynch amassed 2,634 yards and 16 touchdowns over his five year career with the purple and gold. His rushing yards total ranks him third all-time at Laurier.
Finally, Gabler joins the Hawks coaching staff once again. Laurier's special teams coordinator and quarterbacks coach back in 2005 during the Hawks run to the Vanier Cup, Gabler returns to the coaching staff in a mentor role for the quarterbacks.
"Our staff has been working tirelessly since my hire six months ago to ensure that we can provide our current and future Laurier Football players the best student-athlete experience," added Faulds on the work his staff has been doing. "We are teaching more than X's and O's, we are teaching life skills that last much longer than five years of eligibility and in doing so we are building leaders."
The Golden Hawks will assemble for training camp to kick off the 2013 season on August 15. The team will have 10 days to prepare before their season opener against the reigning Yates Cup finalists, the Guelph Gryphons, in Guelph on August 25.
