2012 - Men's Football - Manager of Football Operations & Head CoachGary Jeffries has been a part of the Golden Hawk football coaching staff for over three decades. It was not until 1970 that Gary would find his home at Wilfrid Laurier University. He played football for 2 years from 1970-1971 and was named an All-Star Defensive Half-Back and Rookie of the Year. After his career at Laurier he was drafted by the Toronto Argonauts in 1972 and in 1973 he signed with the Hamilton TigerCats but did not report. Coach Jeffries also played four years in the Detroit Tiger organization prior to beginning his career at Laurier. In 1973 he was hired at Laurier as an assistant football coach and recreation director. From 1984-1988 Jeffries was also the women’s basketball coach at Laurier. In 1989 he took a break from football and coached the men’s basketball team until 1996. In 1994 Rick Zmich convinced Jeffries to return to the game which he loves so much. Gary has coached 30 football seasons at Laruier, with 17 as Defensive Coordinator. He was named the interim head coach midway through the ’02 season and was named the full-time head coach in 2003. He has coached in 19 Yates Cups including championship victories in the 1978, 1987, 2004 and 2005 seasons. Since taking over at the helm of the Hawks, the team has gone 30-3-1 including victories in two Yates Cups (2004, 2005), one Uteck Bowl (2005), and one Vanier Cup (2005). The Golden Hawks defeated the Saskatchewan Huskies in the 2005 Vanier Cup to cap off the season with a perfect 12-0 record. Coach Jeffries has coached over 700 games in total for Laurier (both football and basketball), and his passion for Laurier sport remains undying. Gary resides in Southampton in the off-season with his girlfriend Jill. He has four children: Jonathan, Jodie, Jaime, and Ryan; and five beautiful grandchildren.

It was there that he was recognized as the Athlete of the Year in 1967. While at University, Gary also played professional baseball with the Detroit Tigers for three years.

1980 - Men's Football - Assistant CoachCoach Jeffries enters his 26th season as part of the Golden Hawk football coaching staff. He joined the staff after finishing his playing career at Laurier in 1972. After the 1989 season, Jeffries retired from football until 1994 when he assumed the role of Defensive Co-Ordinator. Coach Jeffries has also served as Head Basketball Coach of both the Men’s and Women’s teams here at Laurier. His defensive units can always be counted on to be at the top of their game each week. Aside from coaching Jeffries is also very involved in co-ordinating summer football and coaching clinics.
