Intramural program recognized for excellence
WATERLOO, Ont. (May 11, 2017) - Wilfrid Laurier University’s Athletics and Recreation department earned their 10th consecutive Outstanding Intramural Achievement Award as they were recognized by the Canadian Intramural and Recreation Association (CIRA) for the 2016-17 academic year.

Laurier’s intramural program has been received the award repeatedly since the 2007-08 academic year.

Since first receiving the award 10 years ago, the intramural program has changed dramatically, impacting the Laurier experience for an entire generation of Golden Hawks. From 479 teams at the end of the 2006-07 academic year, the program now has 730 teams in 64 divisions which accounts for 7,750 participants.

Over the past decade, 11 new sports have been added to the offering available to Laurier students, including European Handball, Full Field Soccer (11v11), Co-rec Flag Football, Co-rec Ice Hockey, Squash, 2v2 Indoor Soccer, Bouldering Series, Badminton, Wallyball, Cricket and 3v3 Basketball.

In total, over 150 students are employed to help ensure the program runs throughout the academic calendar year.

"After coming into university not knowing anyone from high school, I feared it would be hard to make new friends,” said current Wilfrid Laurier University student and Intramural Coordinator Nick McCready on his experience with the intramural program. “This fear completely vanished when I signed up for intramurals at Laurier. Playing basketball and volleyball in my first year, I was able to meet new people very easily. Intramurals have been the driving force of what makes me enjoy Laurier so much and has completely changed my university experience for the better!"

Schools from across Ontario have been recognized for their outstanding intramural/recreation programs. The schools chosen all offer a variety of activities that promote CIRA Ontario's motto of 'Fun, Active Participation for All'. All programs recognized use students in a leadership capacity within their program.  Laurier has improved the quality of education of their students by acknowledging the value of physical activity for mental and physical well-being.

CIRA Ontario is an incorporated, non-profit organization whose mission is to encourage, promote and develop active living, healthy lifestyles and personal growth through intramural and recreational programs within the education and recreation communities.
