WATERLOO, Ont. (February 18, 2014) - Women's curling skip Carly Howard of Penetanguishene, Ont., and men's curling vice Richard Krell of London, Ont., have been named the Laurier Bookstore Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 17, 2014.
Howard guided the Golden Hawks to an OUA Championship victory, Laurier's third in the past four years and seventh overall, this past weekend at the Guelph Curling Club. The third year geography major led her team to a perfect record during round robin play as the Hawks went 6-0 to qualify directly for the semifinals. In the semifinals against Guelph, her draw to the four foot in the eighth end led to a steal of one and a 5-2 win, sending the Hawks to the final. In the gold medal match, Howard's last rock, another draw to the four foot, set up another steal after Carleton's last rock failed to reach the house, giving Laurier a 4-3 win.
This is the second time this season, and second time in her career, that Howard has been named Female Athlete of the Week.
Vice Richard Krell of London, Ont., was instrumental in helping the Golden Hawks qualify for the CIS Championship this past week. After playing third during round robin play where the Hawks went 5-1, the third year communications studies major stepped into the skip's role after the Hawks regular skip, Aaron Squires, fell ill before the semifinals. Despite the last-minute change, Krell guided his team to a commanding 8-1 victory over the Carleton Ravens in the OUA semifinals to qualify the Hawks for their first national championship since 2011. Laurier would go on to win an OUA silver medal after losing to Toronto in the gold medal match.
Krell takes home Male Athlete of the Week honours for the first time in his career.
