Vanderbeek, Courtis Athletes of the Week

WATERLOO, Ont. (February 10, 2014) - Women's swimmer Kaitlin Vanderbeek of Hamilton, and men's swimmer Christopher Courtis of Grand Cayman, KY, have been named the Laurier Bookstore Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 9, 2014.

Vanderbeek won the Golden Hawks first medal at the OUA Swimming Championships in three years this past week. The rookie backstroke specialist touched the wall in a time of 29.83 seconds in the 50m Back to win bronze, the Golden Hawks first medal since 2011. Vanderbeek, a kinesiology and physical education major, swam in one other 'A' final at her first conference championship, placing seventh in the 100m Back, before joining the 400m medley relay team for an eighth place finish.

This marks the second time this season, and second time in her career, that Vanderbeek has been named the Female Athlete of the Week.

Courtis set four new Golden Hawk records at the OUA Swimming Championships this past week. The second year backstroke specialist set individual records in the 50m Back, where he placed fifth, and the 100m Back, where he placed ninth. Courtis, a business major, was also a member of the 200m medley relay and the 400m medley relay that set new school marks and finished fifth and sixth respectively. His time in the 50m Back, 26.17 seconds, also tied his home countrys record, the Cayman Islands, set by two-time Olympian Brett Fraser and his time in the 100m Back qualified him for Senior Nationals and the Canadian Trials.

This is the first time in his career that Courtis has been named the Male Athlete of the Week.
