WATERLOO, Ont. (February 3, 2014) - Women's hockey forward Megan Howe of Stratford, Ont., and men's hockey goalie Vinny Merante of Niagara Falls, N.Y., have been named the Laurier Bookstore Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 2, 2014.
Howe extended her point streak to four games thanks to a four point effort this week for the No. 4 Golden Hawks. The third year biology major opened the weekend with a three assist effort in Laurier's 6-1 win over the Nipissing Lakers, which marked the second consecutive game she'd recorded three assist. Howe followed that up by scoring the game-winning goal against Laurentian in a 3-1 victory, her second goal of the season. The four point weekend now gives her eight points (one goal, seven assists) in her last four games.
This is the first time in her Laurier career that Howe has been honoured as the Female Athlete of the Week.
Merante posted a 2-1-0 record with a 2.31 goals against average and a 0.944 save percentage in three starts for the Golden Hawks this week. The first year economics major opened the week by making 41 saves and stopping all three shooters in the shootout as he backstopped a 13-skater lineup to a 3-2 win over Waterloo. Merante then posted another overtime victory, this time with just 14 Laurier skaters dressed, making 37 saves in a 2-1 win over York. Despite being pulled in a 5-0 loss to Toronto, Merante's play vaulted him to sixth in the OUA in save percentage this season with a sparkling 0.925 mark.
Merante takes home Male Athlete of the Week honours for the first time in his career.
