WATERLOO, Ont. (January 27, 2014) - Women's curling skip Carly Howard of Penetanguishene, Ont., and men's swimmer Dean Bennett of Kitchener, Ont., have been named the Laurier Bookstore Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 26, 2014.
Howard led her team to a first place finish at the Brock Invitational this past weekend in St. Catharines. The third year geography major helped her squad to a perfect 5-0 record which included a 7-0 win over the Toronto Varsity Blues in the final. In total, Howard and her rink outscored their opponents 39-9 over the two days as the Hawks made a statement heading into the OUA Championships next month.
This is the first time that Howard has been honoured as the Female Athlete of the Week.
Bennett set a new Laurier record in the 50m Freestyle this weekend at the Laurier Invitational meet. The first year film major won gold in the event, as he touched the wall in a time of 24.15 seconds, 0.40 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor. Bennett went on to post three other Top 3 finishes at the meet including silver in the 100m Butterfly, bronze in the 100m Backstroke and another bronze as a part of the 200m Individual Medley relay.
