WATERLOO, Ont. (December 2, 2013) - Women's hockey forward Laura Brooker of Fergus, Ont., and men's basketball forward Jack Simmons of Cambridge, Ont., have been named the Laurier Bookstore Athletes of the Week for the week ending December 1, 2013.
Brooker posted seven points in two games this weekend to lead the No. 5 Golden Hawks to a pair of wins heading into the holiday break. The fourth year english major opened the weekend with two assists in a 4-2 win over the York Lions. She followed that up with a career-best five point game, including scoring the opening two goals of the contest, in a 6-0 win over UOIT on Sunday. Brooker's big weekend moved her into eighth in OUA scoring with seven goals and 10 assists for the season.
This is the fifth time in her career that the Laurier captain has been named Female Athlete of the Week.
Simmons had a breakout week for the Golden Hawks as the team posted a pair of wins to improve to 5-5 heading into the holiday break. The first year business major scored a career-high 28 points, on 76.5 percent shooting (11-for-13), to go along with eight rebounds and three assists in Laurier's 94-80 win over Waterloo on Wednesday. He followed that up with 21 points, on 60 percent shooting (9-for-15), and eight rebounds in the Hawks' 82-78 victory over Guelph to finish the week averaging 24.5 points and eight rebounds per game.
Simmons takes home Male Athlete of the Week honours for the first time in his career.
