WATERLOO, Ont. (November 18, 2013) - Women's swimmer Kaitlin Vanderbeek of Hamilton, and men's hockey forward Derek Schoenmakers of Kitchener, Ont., have been named the Laurier Bookstore Athletes of the Week for the week ending November 11, 2013.
Vanderbeek swam a CIS Qualifying time in the 50m backstroke at the Tihanyi Divisionals meet on Saturday at McMaster. The first year kinesiology and physical education major won a silver medal at the meet in a time of 29.78 seconds, just 0.65 seconds from gold and good enough to qualify for the CIS Championships in her rookie season. Vanderbeek's performance helped the Golden Hawks finish 4th in the team standings.
This marks the first time in her career that Vanderbeek has been named the Female Athlete of the Week.
Schoenmakers continued his red-hot play this weekend registering six points in a pair of wins for the Golden Hawks. The second year arts major had a goal and two assists in Laurier's 6-2 win over Nipissing and their 6-0 win over Laurentian. By picking up points on 50 percent of the Hawks goals this weekend, Schoenmakers now has 10 points in his last four games and his eight goals ranks him eight in the conference overall.
Schoenmakers earns Male Athlete of the Week honours for the second consecutive week.
