WATERLOO, Ont. (November 11, 2013) - Women's hockey forward Laura Brooker of Fergus, Ont., and men's hockey forward Derek Schoenmakers of Kitchener, Ont., have been named the Laurier Bookstore Athletes of the Week for the week ending November 10, 2013.
Brooker had a four-point weekend for the No. 5 Golden Hawks as they stretched their winning streak to four games. On Saturday, the fourth year english major had a three-point game, one goal and two assists, in the Hawks 7-2 win over the Laurentian Voyageur. She added another goal Sunday in Laurier's 5-1 win over Nipissing and now has 10 points over her last seven games.
This marks the fourth time in her career that she has been named the Female Athlete of the Week.
Schoenmakers set a new Laurier single-game modern-day record against the Concordia Stingers on Friday night. The second year arts major scored four goals, including the game winner, as he became the first Golden Hawk to do accomplish the feat in a single game since record tracking began in 1999. The Hawks would go on to earn their first win of the year against the Stingers 6-4.
This is the first time in his career that Schoenmakers has been named the Male Athlete of the Week.
