Ward, Allin named Athletes of the Week

WATERLOO, Ont. (November 4, 2013) - Women's soccer goalkeeper Katrina Ward of Surrey, B.C., and men's basketball guard Max Allin of Chatham, Ont., have been named the Laurier Bookstore Athletes of the Week for the week ending November 3, 2013.

Ward was a rock in net for the No. 10 Golden Hawks as she posted two shutouts at the OUA Final Four tournament to help her team claim their eighth OUA banner. The fourth year health sciences major stopped all 18 shots she faced in 240 minutes as Laurier posted shootout wins over Carleton in the semifinals and No. 1 Western in the final. The 5-8 keeper also denied five of the 11 shooters she faced in penalty kicks, including making three saves in the championship-deciding game against the Mustangs. Through three playoff games this season, Ward has yet to allow a single goal in 330 minutes of action.

This is the third time in her career that Ward has earned Female Athlete of the Week honours.

Allin helped the  Hawks post a 1-1 record on their opening weekend. The fifth year arts major opened the weekend with a 14-point, seven rebound performance in the Hawks 98-53 win over Algoma. He then posted 25 points, eight rebounds and six assists in a 78-71 loss to Laurentian. His 19.5 point weekend average was aided by an impressive display from three point range which saw the reigning CIS scoring champion shoot 52.4 percent from downtown, connecting on 11 of 21 attempts.

Allin earns Male Athlete of the Week honours for the 14th time in his career.
