WATERLOO, Ont. (October 15, 2013) - Women's soccer forward Emily Brown of Waterloo, Ont., and men's baseball pitcher Ian Filion of Whitby, Ont., have been named the Laurier Bookstore Athletes of the Week for the week ending October 13, 2013.
Brown continued her torrid scoring pace this past weekend as she netted three of the Hawks' four goals on the weekend. The third year business major scored the game's opening goal in Laurier's 2-1 victory over York on Saturday and followed that up by scoring both of her team's goals in a 4-2 loss to No. 4 Western on Sunday. Her three goal weekend now gives her 14 on the season which leads the OUA and ranks her second in Canada.
This is the seventh time in her career that Brown has been named the Female Athlete of the Week.
Filion threw a no-hitter for the Golden Hawks in a 12-0 win over the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday. The fourth year economics major faced only one batter higher than the minimum, walking one, while striking out three to lower his season ERA to an impressive 1.71. The no-hitter was just the second in the history of the Golden Hawks' program and clinched Laurier a spot in this weekend's OUA Championship tournament.
Filion is recognized as the Male Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career.
