WATERLOO, Ont. (September 30, 2013) - Women's rugby centre Chloe Graves of Kitchener, Ont., and men's baseball pitcher Brett Van Pelt of Whitby, Ont., have been named the Laurier Bookstore Athletes of the Week for the week ending September 29, 2013.
Graves played a big role in helping the Golden Hawks snap their four year losing streak on Saturday with a 13-7 win against Brock. The second year kinesiology and physical education major was a force all over the field, making tackles and constantly hitting rucks. She had numerous long runs putting her team in great scoring position leading to both her team's tries.
She earns Female Athlete of the Week honours for the first time in her career.
Van Pelt continued to dominate OUA hitters this weekend in Laurier's 9-0 win over McMaster. He pitched a complete game, one-hit shutout while striking out 10 Marauder hitters. The performance was his third complete game of the season in three starts and lowered his ERA to 1.42, second best in the conference. His 10 strikeouts also give him 26 on the season which is tied for first in the OUA with teammate Jordan Petruska.
This is the second time in his career that he's been named Male Athlete of the Week.
