WATERLOO, Ont. (February 19, 2013) - Women's basketball forward Whitney Ellenor of Pickering, Ont., and men's basketball guard Maxwell Allin of Chatham, Ont., have been named the Laurier Bookstore Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 18, 2013.
Ellenor was instrumental in Laurier closing out the regular season with a pair of victories. The third year history major had 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting, seven rebounds, three assists and three blocks as the Golden Hawks defeated Guelph 68-51 on Wednesday. She then had 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting, 11 rebounds, five assists and five blocks as the Hawks edged the Mustangs, their first round playoff opponent, 59-58 on Saturday. Those numbers helped her finish the season with an 11.1 points per game scoring average to lead her team, while her eight blocks gave her 38 for the season, second-best in the CIS.
This is the first time that Ellenor has been named the Female Athlete of the Week.
Allin helped the Golden Hawks close out the season with back-to-back wins, earning the team a home playoff game as they finished fourth in the OUA West division. The fourth year arts major scored 34 points on 58 percent (11-19) shooting to go with 10 rebounds and two assists in the Hawks 96-82 win over Guelph. Allin then registered his second career triple-double, a 30 point, 12 assist, 10 rebound effort in a 102-84 win over Western. His outstanding week also earned him the CIS Scoring Title as he finished the season averaging 23.9 points per game, while also finishing eighth in the nation in both rebounds (9.4) and assists (4.6) per game.
This marks the 12th time in his career that Allin has been named the Male Athlete of the Week.
