WATERLOO, Ont. (January 21, 2013) - Women's hockey forward Tammy Freiburger of Wingham, Ont., and men's hockey goaltender Ryan Daniels of Pickering, Ont., have been named the Laurier Bookstore Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 20, 2013.
Freiburger registered her second-straight four point weekend as she recorded four assists in Laurier's wins over Windsor and No. 9 Western. In Friday's 4-0 win over the Lancers, the third year arts major picked up the primary assist on three goals for her first three-point game of the season before adding another assist in Laurier's 3-2 win over nationally-ranked Western. The third year forward is now averaging nearly a point per game this season with 16 points in 17 games.
This is the second time in her career that Freiburger has earned Female Athlete of the Week honours.
Daniels had a spectacular week for the red-hot Wilfrid Laurier men's hockey team who earned upset victories over nationally-ranked Western as well as Windsor. On Thursday against the OUA's top team, the fourth year business major turned aside all 36 shots he faced as Laurier ended No. 2 Western's 15-game winning streak with a 2-0 win. He followed that up with a 43 save performance against the second best team in the OUA West division as the Hawks defeated the Lancers 2-1. He finished with weekend stopping 79 of 80 shots for a 0.988 SV% while posting a 0.50 GAA and has been crucial in the Hawks rise up the OUA West standings as they have won five of their last six games.
Daniels has now earned Male Athlete of the Week honours twice this season and nine times during his career with the Golden Hawks.
