WATERLOO, Ont. (January 14, 2013) - Women's hockey forward Caitlin Muirhead of Waterloo, Ont., and men's basketball guard Maxwell Allin of Chatham, Ont., have been named the Laurier Bookstore Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 13, 2013.
Muirhead helped lead the No. 4 Golden Hawks to a pair of wins this weekend over Toronto and Ryerson. In Friday's 6-1 win over the Varsity Blues, the fifth year kinesiology and physical education major had two goals and an assist before adding a goal in Laurier's 5-2 win over Ryerson on Sunday. The four point weekend gives Muirhead 16 points on the season and stretches her season-best point streak to four games.
This is the first time in her Golden Hawks career that Muirhead has been named the Female Athlete of the Week.
Allin established a new Wilfrid Laurier modern-day single-game scoring record in the Golden Hawks game against Guelph on Saturday. The fourth year arts major finished the game with 43 points on 13-of-20 (65%) shooting, including 6-of-10 from 3-point range and 11-of-12 from the free throw line. He also added eight rebounds and two assists in the game, a 94-88 loss to the Gryphons. Earlier in the week, in the Hawks' 112-92 upset win over No. 8 Windsor, Allin scored 28 points, 10 assists and 7 rebounds. He now leads the CIS in scoring at 26.3 points per game after averaging 35.5 points per game this week.
Allin takes home Male Athlete of the Week honours for the fourth time this season and 11th in his four year career.
