Mommersteeg, Lebar named Athletes of the Week

WATERLOO, Ont. (December 3, 2012) - Women's hockey defenceman Maureen Mommersteeg of St. Thomas, Ont., and men's hockey forward Mitch Lebar of Aurora, Ont., have been named the Laurier Bookstore Athletes of the Week for the week ending December 2, 2012.

Mommersteeg was a pillar of strength on defence for the No. 6 Golden Hawks in a pair of wins this weekend. The kinesiology/physical education major logged big minutes and was a key member of the penalty kill unit that went a perfect 16-for-16, including three lengthy 5-on-3's, in wins over Waterloo and York. She also added her second assist of the season on the Hawks game winning goal in their 5-0 win over the Warriors.

This is the first time that Mommersteeg has been honoured as the Female Athlete of the Week.

Lebar continued his strong offensive season for the Golden Hawks as he had four points in two games. The arts major had a goal and an assist in both of the Hawks games, a 5-3 loss to UOIT and a 4-3 loss to York. The second year forward currently leads the team in scoring with seven goals and nine assists in 16 games and is on pace to easily eclipse his rookie scoring totals from a year ago.

This is also the first time that Lebar has been named the Male Athlete of the Week.
