Women's basketball announces 2012-13 recruits
WATERLOO, Ont. (June 22, 2012) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's basketball team is proud to announce three recruits for the 2012-13 season.
"I am very pleased to be adding Kaitlyn, Heather, and Nadine to our roster this fall," Head Coach Paul Falco said of the recruits. "They are three quality individuals who love to compete. These additions along with 2011 red-shirt Whitney Ellenor will give us good balance in both the guard and forward positions."
Schenck joins the Golden Hawks from the KW Lighting JUEL club and St. Mary's High School where she has been a strong player for both teams. During her high school career, the 5'7 guard was the St. Mary's 2010 Senior Athlete of the Year, 2011 Senior Girls Basketball MVP and a four-time District 8 Basketball MVP.
"Kate was one of our leaders and instrumental in us finishing second and fourth in Ontario the last two seasons," commented KW Lightning coach Bob Urosevic. "She's a tremendous athlete who's become a very good all around basketball player."
Payne, a 5'10 forward, comes to the Hawks from Widdifield Secondary School where she was a two-time MVP for the senior girls basketball team, as well as the school's athlete of the year in 2011-12.
Payne, who has also spent three seasons with the Sudbury Selects, is excited to become a Golden Hawk saying, "the opportunity to play basketball at Laurier for Coach Falco made it my number one choice."
Rounding off the list of recruits Chomyc, a 5'9 guard that brings past CIS experience to the Hawks. Chomyc, a two-time CIS Academic All-Canadian, spent two seasons with the University of Prince Edward Island between 2009 and 2011, earning the team's Rookie of the Year award in her first season. For the 2011-12 season, Chomyc played in Stersund, Sweden, with Jamtland Basket Damligan.
She brings her experience to the Hawks where she already feels at home saying, "from my first run with the Laurier Basketball team, I felt an instant connection with the team and coaching staff."
Coach Falco is excited to implement these three new additions. "The coaching staff can't wait to get to work in September with this new look Golden Hawk squad."
The Hawks open the regular season on the road on November 9 when they will face Queen's in Kingston with their home opener the following weekend, November 16, when they host the Toronto Varsity Blues at the Athletics Complex.
