DONCASTER, England (April 16, 2012) - For the second time in a month, a former member of the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's soccer team has been signed to a professional contract as Tania Pedron
of Maple, Ont., will join the Doncaster Rovers Belles of the Football Association Women's Soccer League.
She joins former teammate Alyssa Lagonia
of Kitchener, Ont., who signed with Doncaster back in March. Lagonia scored in her first league appearance last week in the Rovers Belles 3-1 defeat to the hands of Chelsea.
Pedron, a two-time CIS All-Canadian, played with the Golden Hawks for five years, helping them OUA Championships in 2008 and 2010. A strong, defensive midfielder, Pedron is also a four-time OUA First Team All-Star and in 2010 she was named the OUA West division Most Valuable Player.
This past season, in her final year at Laurier, Pedron scored one goal while helping the Hawks earn an OUA Silver Medal and a seventh place finish at the CIS Championship.
"Tania has come in and done well," commented Rovers Belles manager John Buckley in a team release. "She's very competitive and has a tremendous desire and will to win."
"She's a tall, strong midfielder who can add some real presence to our squad," continued Buckley. "I'm looking forward to working with her and I'm convinced that she will be a good addition."
"This is an excellent opportunity to continue my soccer career," said Pedron of the chance to play against some of the best women's soccer players in the world. "My time at Laurier helped to prepare me for this experience and I can't wait to get started."
Pedron will be immediately added to the teams roster in preparation for their upcoming league match against Everton at home on April 29.
