WATERLOO (September 4, 2011) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's soccer team (1-0-1) were able to once again prove themselves as competitors in the OUA after beating the Guelph Gryphons 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Both teams began the first half of the game aggressively, with the ball being equally played on both sides of the field. Golden Hawks forward Matthew Maughn of Mississauga, Ont., had the game's opening chance but it was saved by Guelph goalkeeper Chad Paparoni of Burlington, Ont. Eventually, in the 23rd minute of the first half, Giorgio Delgado of Caracas, VE., scored against the Gryphons after a breakaway.

The Gryphons responded with a chance of their own as midfielder Drew Gowan of Welland, Ont., was given a chance on goal, but it was caught by Hawks keeper, Brett Harrington of Tillsonburg, Ont. Harrington would go on to finish the match with four saves.

The second half saw neither team generate much in the way of a quality scoring chance and the Hawks were able to hold on for the 1-0 victory.

The Hawks will be back on the pitch next weekend when they travel to London to take on the Western Mustangs at TD Waterhouse Stadium on September 10th at 3:15 p.m.
