OUA Swimming Championship - Day 1
GUELPH, Ont. - Wilfrid Laurier's swimming team traveled to Guelph for the 2011 OUA championships. The Hawks were looking to build their recent success at the tournament.
After the first day of competition, Laurier sat in seventh place in the women's standings and ninth in the men's. The men only competed in three events on the first day, while the women posted results in five. Whitney Rich of Dorchester, Ont. continues to lead the Hawks in the pool with two fourth place finishes. One was with her 200 metre freestyle team of Brittany Shaw (Kitchener, Ont.), Renee Dijk (Stratford, Ont.) and Jocelyn Gillespie (Orangeville, Ont.) and the other was in the 200 metre breaststroke. Laurier's other top finisher on the women's side was Brittany Shaw with seventh place spot in the 50 metre freestyle. For the men the 200 and 800 metre freestyle teams posted ninth place finishes while Carlos Riobo (Kitchener, Ont.) struggled in the 50 metre freestyle, posting a 16th place finish. The Golden Hawks will look to get on the podium as the championship continues on day two. |
