HALIFAX, N.S. - Justine Colley (East Preston, N.S.) led the Saint Mary's Huskies to victory over the Wilfrid Laurier women's basketball team Thursday evening. The Golden Hawks were kicking off their preseason tournament in Nova Scotia.
Colley put up a game high 28 points and also added a team high six assists to lead her team to victory over the Hawks. The Huskies and Hawks were evenly matched in most facets of the game, the only exception being Saint Mary's sharper shooting from the field. The Huskies led for the majority of the game and was able to hold off a late rally from Laurier in the fourth quarter. The Huskies were able to use their bench to an advantage tallying up an impressive 24 points to Laurier's 10.
The Golden Hawks received a strong effort from Megan Grant
(Thunder Bay, Ont.) who was able to rack up a double-double; recording 13 points and 10 rebounds. Other top scorers for Laurier included Kimberley Yeldon
(Ottawa, Ont.) and Alena Luciani
(Oakville, Ont.) who had nine and seven points respectively.
For the Huskies, Justine Colley led with 28 points, followed by Maegan Seaward (Deer Lake, Nfld.) with 10 points. Robbi Daley (Hanwell, N.B.) and Susanne Canvin (Charlottetown, P.E.I.) had an identical eight points. Amanda Smith (Owen Sound, Ont.) led her team with eight rebounds.
Laurier continues its preseason tournament on Friday, October 1st against the Acadia Axewomen in Wolfville, N.S., and then will finish its trip to the East Coast on Saturday, October 2nd against Dalhousie Tigers.
