Curling Hawks Conclude Season with Win

Laurier: 8 CIS Championship - Memorial: 7
EDMONTON The Golden Hawk mens curling team wrapped up their season today with the final pool play game of the CIS Championship at the Saville Centre on the campus of the University of Alberta.

The Hawks defeated Memorial University 8-7 to finish 2-4 overall in pool play.  Only the top two teams in each pool advance, so the Golden Hawk season concludes today.

We were fortunate to have an opportunity to compete at nationals, commented Head Coach Gary Crossley on the team travelling to Edmonton. We gained some good national exposure which was good for our program due to our high return rate for next year.

Laurier played all three draws on Friday, defeating Calgary 9-8 before falling to Regina 8-3 and Toronto 7-6.

The final day saw the Golden Hawks pick up their second win of the championship tournament against Memorial, 8-7. The Hawks opened picking up two in the first end but Memorial responded with three.  By the sixth end the score was 5-4 for Laurier and Memorial held the hammer. The Seahawks blanked the sixth hoping for more but settled with one in the seventh end. Skip Scott McGregor (Exeter, Ont.) made a great shot on his final throw in the tenth end to pick up the deuce and claim the victory.

We proved to be a competitive team and it puts us very confidant looking forward to next year, concluded Crossley. Of the four we lost, two were in extra ends and well look to improve for next year.
