| | The Golden Hawks’ overall season record now stands at 138-99-7-5 after this week’s play.
The women’s hockey team is one step closer to defending its OUA championship after a 2-0 series sweep of the Windsor Lancers. Playing the only team to defeat it in regular season play this year, the Golden Hawks took it to Windsor with a sound 6-0 victory on home ice Thursday night. Candice Styles and Katherine Shirriff each netted two goals and Liz Knox stopped all 15 shots she faced en route to the win. Saturday saw Captain Andrea Ironside finish off a pass from Caitlin Muirhead to score the series-winning goal. The purple and gold will now host the University of Guelph Gryphons in a rematch from last year’s OUA finals.
After defeating Western 89-70 in their opening playoff game, the men’s basketball team saw its season come to a close in Windsor when the first-place Lancers downed the Golden Hawks 87-79. Both games were played on the road and saw balanced scoring from the Golden Hawks with four players registering double-digit point totals in each contest. Jeese MacDonald finished his OUA basketball career with 30 points over the two games while Kale Harrison (37 points) and Travis Berry (32 points) were strong contributors as well. The season-ending loss to Windsor was their third defeat at the hands of the no. 7 nationally ranked Lancers.
The Golden Hawks also fell on the court in women’s action, as the Lakehead Thunderwolves beat the visiting purple and gold 70-64 in the OUA West Quarter-Final. The Thunderwolves had a strong first half as they outscored the Hawks by six. After the break, Laurier went on a run thanks to strong defence and Mallory Kohlmeier put up some important points including hitting a couple of three pointers to close the gap. The purple and gold led by six going into the final quarter but got into foul trouble and were outscored 18-6, ending their season. Kohlmeier earned a team-high 19 points in the performance. Three other Hawks were in double-digit scoring including Christa Mancino (Port Colborne, Ont.) with 16, Renata Adamczyk (Greensville, Ont.) with 11 and Luciani. Adamczyk also led the team in rebounds with 11.
Laurier’s Indoor Middle Distance team finished their season this past Friday at the OUA Championship in Toronto. The Golden Hawks had six top-25 finishes in four different events. Lindsay Wright placed 16th in the Women’s 1000M event, while Jennifer Laughton (17th) and Catherine Sakkau (22nd) competed in the 1500M race. Sohaib Ikram finished tenth in the Men’s 1000M as well as 19th in the 1500M. Laurier also took home 20th in the Men’s 3000M race thanks to Brent Meidinger.
