Women's Curling claims gold in Japan
KARUIZAWA, Japan - Wilfrid Laurier's women's curling team claimed the gold medal representing Canada at the Karuizawa International Curling championships with a 12-11 win over Sweden. The squad consisted of skip Hollie Nichol (Markham, Ont.), Laura Hickey (Toronto, Ont.), Danielle Inglis (Kleinburg, Ont.) and Hillary McDermott (Guelph, Ont.).

Laurier advanced to the tournament after claiming their second straight CIS championship in Montreal last March. This year’s CIS champion will compete at the FISU games in Ersurum, Turkey.

The Golden Hawks advanced to the final four after finishing 6-1 in round robin play. They defeated New Zealand 7-2, Korea 6-5, Japan 6-1, Nagano Selection 5-3, China 7-3 and Germany 7-4. Their only loss came against the Swedish team 9-6.

In the semi-final the purple and golf edged out Germany 7-6 to advance to the championship draw.

The men’s team from Manitoba also claimed gold with a 10-3 win over Japan.

The team will now return to compete in the Crossover event hosted by Trent University.
