[WATERLOO,ON] – Following last week’s appointment of Gary Jeffries
as Manager of Football Operations and Head Coach, the Laurier Athletic Department continues to build on their plan to “Invest in People, Improve the Product and Win.”
Today, Gary Jeffries
added some purple and gold to his football coaching staff by announcing two new members to the offensive unit. Bob Stacey
‘80 has been named the Quality Control Coach for the Offence and Stefan Ptaszek
‘94 as the Offensive Coordinator for the team. Both men, along with Jeffries are products of Nelson High School in Burlington. These two individuals, along with Wally Gabler
will provide the leadership under Gary Jeffries
for the Laurier Coaching Staff.
“We have completed putting the final pieces of the puzzle in place with the appointment of Bob Stacey
and Stefan Ptaszek
”, announced Jeffries, “Both men will assist us in bringing back the offensive side of the ball to national prominence.”
“I’m excited to be part of this coaching staff”, said Stacey. “It’s great to be involved in a program that is supported from the administration on down.” After a career as a Hawk from 1976-80, Stacey has captured numerous championships at the high school level, including two OFSAA Metro-Bowl Championships, and looks forward to re-joining the Hawks.
Ptaszek also expressed his thoughts on joining the team. “I’m extremely excited about the opportunity to work with this talented staff”. In working with this Coaching Staff he also looks “forward to working with the quality student athletes who are a part of it.” Ptaszek is a former Laurier All-Canadian and member of the Golden Hawk Hall of Fame.
The new coaching staff is an assembly of alumni of Burlington’s Nelson High School. Both Gary Jeffries
and Stefan Ptaszek
were students of the school while Bob Stacey
was a teacher-coach for over 20 years.
Bob Stacey – Quality Control Coach – Offense
Bob joins the Golden Hawks Coaching Staff after a very successful high school coaching career. This former Hawk played for Laurier from 1976-1980 as a safety for a team that competed for the Yates Cup in all four years of his career, and captured the Ontario Championship in 1978.
After graduating from Laurier, Bob joined Nelson High School as a Physical Education Teacher in 1982 and was promoted as the Athletic Director in 1998. Throughout his career at Nelson, Bob has captured numerous championships including an OFSAA Gold Medal in Basketball in 2001 and an OFSAA Metro-Bowl Title in Football in 1997 and 1999. Bob is the lone Coach to have captured an OFSAA title in both Basketball and Football.
Bob presently resides in Burlington with his wife Joanne and three children, Brock, Zack, and Natalie.

Stefan Ptaszek – Offensive Coordinator
Stefan joins the Golden Hawk Coaching Staff after an outstanding career with the Hawks from 1990-94. Following graduation in 1994 with an honours Bachelor of Business Administration degree, Stefan then pursued a CFL career with B.C. and Hamilton, before retiring to attend teachers college at the University of Toronto in 1996. Following completion of his Bachelor of Education degree, he then taught at Southwood Secondary in Cambridge for 3 years, during which time he re-joined the CFL, this time with the Toronto Argonauts in 1999. After two seasons with the Argos, Stefan then traveled to the University of British Columbia to take his MBA. Stefan completed his MBA in Finance in 2002 and has most recently been working as a financial analyst with the accenture in Toronto.
During Stefan’s various academic and job commitments, Stefan always found time to feed his love of coaching. As an assistant coach with the Nelson Lords of Burlington in 1995-96, as the offensive coordinator with Southwood in 1997-98 that captured a Waterloo County Title, and as a receivers coach with Laurier, and most recently as the Special Teams Coordinator/Co-Offensive Coordinator with the UBC Thunderbirds.
Stefan presently resides in Toronto, Ontario with his fiancé Karen Zylak. Karen is a producer for TSN.
